Why Many Palm Desert Trails Aren’t Dog-Friendly and How We Still Give Dogs a Great Adventure

Palm Desert’s stunning mountains draw hikers from all over, but they’re also home to the endangered Peninsular bighorn sheep. Because of this, many wilderness trails do not allow dogs, and for good reason.
This may sound like a challenge for a dog adventure service, but at Desert Doggie Adventure Camp, we fully support these protections and still give pups a safe, fun, enriching day outdoors.
Why Dogs Aren’t Allowed on Most Trails
Endangered species protection: Peninsular bighorn sheep are sensitive to disturbance, especially during lambing season
Dogs can cause stress or disease transmission: Dogs can disrupt wildlife or leave behind scents that alter animal behavior
Strict regulations: State and federal land agencies enforce dog bans in many key areas to preserve this fragile population
What Trails Actually Allow Dogs
Dogs are not allowed in bighorn sheep habitat zones, which covers much of the wilderness area. But not all access is off-limits and you can still recreate responsibly with dogs in many areas:
The San Bernardino National Forest section of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument allows dogs on leash on designated trails and forest service roads
Palm Desert & the surrounding areas have several dog-friendly hiking trails: Palm Desert Cross Trail, La Quinta Cove, Whitewater Preserve are just a few of them (we'll create a more detailed post with dog friendly trails soon!)
In addition to these approved trails, Palm Desert has amazing alternatives for dog enrichment, including:
Beautiful neighborhood walking loops
Dog parks throughout town
Scenic urban greenways and quiet residential paths
Our Responsible Adventure Approach
At Desert Doggie Adventure Camp, we build our adventures with safety, legality, and environmental respect in mind.
We:
Avoid all bighorn sheep zones and closed trails
Use only dog-approved areas like designated dog-friendly hiking trails, local parks, and neighborhoods
Keep dogs leashed in all public areas
Regularly confirm trail rules with land managers and rangers
Adjust routes seasonally to reflect current wildlife activity and regulations
Where We Walk and Hike
We keep our adventures flexible and engaging with a mix of destinations, including:
Palm Desert neighborhoods with shade, views, and safe sidewalks
Local dog parks for off-leash social time
Civic Center Park & many of our other local parks for leashed walking loops
Designated dog-friendly hiking trails
